The Mohans bought West Street Vineyard in 2009. It was the meeting of two loves: wine and Coggeshall; they had considered buying a vineyard in the Languedoc, but knew they would miss home. The 900 30 year old vines were in need of a lot of love and care and the rest of the 6 acre village plot was weeds.
With planning permission for the restaurant acquired, it was time to expand the vineyard. Clearing away the weeds and preparing the soil culminating in the planting of 3,000 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines from Burgundy. The plan was and is to grow the best wines we can from this part of Essex and combine it with a lovely place to sit and relax. Whether that is enjoying breakfast, lunch or dinner with friends and family.
We built the cellar first and then in October 2012 our flat pack building arrived from Germany. In four days we went from nothing to a weather proof building with roof. It was an incredible experience seeing the dream become a reality for all the family.
Day 3 ...
April 21st 2013 St Georges Day, West Street Vineyard opened its doors for the first time.
It is still early days at West Street. Our wines are winning prizes including silver medals in the UK wine competition and a bronze medal in the most influential wine competition in the world the International Wine Challenge for our 2013 White wine. Our food and service is winning plaudits and we have so many wonderful guests who return time and time again. All the crew and the Mohan family would like to thank everyone who has supported us to make our dream a reality..... Lovely food and interesting wines served in a stunning setting shared with family and friends.
In May 2017, the world renowned International Wine Challenge elected West Street Vineyard as the only East Anglian Gold Medal winner of their Cellar Door Award.
We are really proud of this as it celebrates all aspects of West Street, from wine tasting, through great service with wonderful food and drink and - of course - the fabulous views.
